Amazon.co.uk There's something strange and frightening happening in the middle of New York City's Central Park; something whispered to have been intentionally kept secret; something that players are compelled to explore in Alone in the Dark.Known today as a safe haven for New Yorkers yearning for relief from the stresses of their chaotic metropolis, history records that Central Park was built on a useless swamp, yet as the New York City skyline hurtled towards the sky over the last 150 years, making the city the most expensive real estate in the world, the park has remained untouched. Why? Civic pride? Perhaps, but the recent strange happenings in and around the park are casting doubt on that, doubts that require investigating.
The return of an iconic series |
Paranormal PI Edward Carnby. . | Stunningly spooky views of NYC. . | The odd wildlife of Central Park. . | A whole new inventory system. . | Enter Edward Carnby, Paranormal Investigator Despite the title, Alone in the Dark is actually the fifth game in a series that dates back to 1992 and centers around the experiences of Edward "the reptile" Carnby. A paranormal investigator by trade, Carnby is looking for answers to the strange events and horrific creatures reported in and around the park, but gets more than he bargained for when all the mysteries and terrors of the park spill out over the course of one apocalyptic night. It's the player's task to avoid the new frightening dangers of the park as you search for the answers to what these supernatural occurrences mean and why they are happening.Gameplay Based on Full Player Immersion Packed full of action and vivid in its realism Alone in the Dark goes to the extreme to keep players engaged and immersed by plunging them into the heart of the action in real-time at every turn and challenging them to survive using full movement control. The goal here is to allow players to do or at least feel that they can do more or less whatever is possible in real life, within the game.Need to avoid a blast of steam or an eruption of fire that has shot up in your path? You can simply side-step it or you can handle the obstacle with a little more panache by using the environment around you, for example by swinging around it using reachable pipes or wires. In another situation you may be challenged by attacking monsters. No problem. You can take the path of least resistance, again by side-stepping them or placing an obstacle between yourself and them, but if you are feeling like taking out a little aggression you can pick up a board, chair, box, etc. and have at it. Nearly anything that you come across that would be usable in real life is usable in game and can be wielded in several different ways.In addition, game developer Eden Studios has done away with a few in-game conventions in favour of real life upgrades. Instead of old-fashioned health bars Alone in the Dark uses realistic body damage and physiological effects to show players how much damage has been done to Carnby by the new dangerous nightlife of Central Park. Basically this means if Carnby has been taking a licking he's going to be a little bloody. Monsters use sensory perception of all kinds to find their victims, so players need to keep aware of Carnby's physical state, as well as the impact he has on his surroundings. Also gone are traditional inventory systems that take players out of the game while you switch or check items in your possession, replaced by an in-game inventory system where items are carried in the folds of Carnby's trench coat. This allows you to stay in the action the whole time. Sticking with the realism theme, the number of items that Carnby can carry is limited, but since ingenuity is built into the system, items can be combined or their uses altered, mostly with tape, so players can adjust as challenges arise.TV Style Intensity That Keeps You Hooked Built around a unique television style episodic narrative game structure, the storyline of Alone in the Dark is split into a number of distinct 30-40 minute episodes, doled out one at a time as you play. This new way to progress through the storyline ensures that players can enjoy the game regardless of the amount of time they have available without ever feeling lost. Each time a saved game is launched, the episode will begin with a video summary of the previous episode to quickly re-immerse the player in the story, removing the need to remember where you were or what you were doing at the end of your last play session. In addition, every episode will also close with a nail-biting, cliff-hanger ending to rattle players' nerves. And when you choose to leave the game, a video teaser of the next episode will play to leave players always wanting more.Vivid Photographic Rendering Even on a bad day, and this will be a bad one, Central Park and New York City are something to see. With Game developer Eden's proprietary Twilight technology and rendering engine, players can expect to see everything from the City's famous landmarks to the manifestations of the evil that have been festering in Central Park come to life as if you were there. This lavishly detailed game world takes advantage of highly realistic and advanced cinematographic effects including depth of field, camera focus, numerous light sources, moisture, reflections and High Dynamic Range effects.Whether it's the innovative game play, the unique episodic game structure, the advanced physics or the return of a ground-breaking protagonist recast in the modern era, Alone in the Dark holds something for players willing to take on the mysteries and dangers at the heart of Central Park.

Unique Game that takes you out of the repetitiveness that you see elsewhere April 28, 2010 Mr. M. E. Alshaikly (U.K.) This game is the best offline PS3 game so far (cuz I think COD-MOD2 is the best online game).. I've always been a big fan of horror games like Silent hill and resident evil ..but I would say that this game had beaten them and all the other horror games.
The graphics are brilliant.. the story line is awesome.. the puzzles and the game play are the best part.. for example:
- U can switch in between 1st or 3rd person modes
- U can combining items that you collect to make brand new stuff...its a game of improvisation..
- U could use anything in the scene or environment as a weapon to beat the enemies!! bats, mopes, trunks, chairs...etc (you might say, in silent hill you do the same..but its not!! you don't have to carry these items as part of your inventory list..(its more like manhunt)
- U can jump in to a car and drive it anywhere you want!! how cool is that (not mentioning that you can check and search the car for items)
- U can switch to the healing mode which is pretty original (more like MGS only better) and search for wounds in your body and heal them.
There are much more stuff that will keep you amazed throughout the game.. no repetition at all.. Great bosses with weakness points that you need to figure out in order to defeat them..not just shoot and beat!! In all the horror games that I've played, the rule of thumb is to get powerful weapons, collect ammo and be economical..here its not the case
If you like uncharted, and if you are a fan of horror games, then u should definitely get this one!!
I only hope that there will be a sequel to this game (btw... I haven't completed it yet)
Buy this game and you'll never regret it
PS I never played any of the alone in the dark games in the past (i.e. PS & PS2)
Superb game for its price. June 8, 2009 David Billings (United Kingdom) This game is fantastic for it's price. The story was quite gripping and in my opinion much better than anticipated. though the swearing in this game made me wonder how it got a 15 certificuite. The survival techniques in the game really gets you fearing death if you haven't got any fuel with you to kill the humanz.
The playstation 3 copy of the game is much better than the previous release as it has subtle differences in the game to make it that much better. The music was composed by olivier Olivier Deriviere who was in other horror game projects such as Obscure and Obscure 2. The music was just right in this game as Harry Gregson Williams scored epicly on Metal Gear Solid. I think music defienetly adds the icing on the cake when trying to get emotion across and this game wasn't far off amazing in that department.
Gameplay is fun and also very new all the time. With so much weapons to customise you will never really think that creating a sticky bomb with a glowstic is boring. I think that atari has made a 1 in 100 creation and made this game superb. The plot twists in the game is also good and i like how the episodes are cut just like if you'd watch a season of Heroes or something. I thought this game was original and should be bought at such a low price. There really is so much to talk about but there really isn't enough time to talk all about the game. Even if you have to rent this game it's a must play.
A rollercoaster ride of cinematic awesome-ness April 18, 2009 Mr. Im Cooper (Hartlepool UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this game a few days ago and have recently completed it. Im new to the alone in the dark franchise so i cant compare this game with other games in the series but what i can say is that this game is one hell of a ride from start to finish.
It all kicks off with you waking in the middle of a conversation between 3 individuals whilst laid on your back on some bed with your vision impaired probably assuming one of the men who are talking knocked you out. they speak of some "path of light". It is from here you are shown how to blink. Ive never ever come across a game that allows you to control blinking and shutting your eyes, i thought it was awesome as later in the game you need to close your eyes to solve a puzzle. you are then escorted to your doom with direction of one of the goons to the roof of the building your in. Half way up, something attacks the guy escorting you and your then introduced to the Fissure who is the enemy type of the game. At this point its just a crack in the walls which sucks people into it but later develops into humans that can only be eliminated by fire. Because this is the only way of execution, the game allows you to use your imagination when it comes to weaponry. For example you can use a lighter and a spray can to use as a little flamethrower, or you can douse your bullets in flameable liquid to get flaming bullets....awesome. The driving is another thing that makes this game cool. The driving is simple but unrealistic but that definately doesnt bother me when your racing through new york trying to reach central park whilst behind you the earth is crumbling away from this new enemy executing jumps that switch the game to a cinematic slow down view...a definite feel good factor. The game is not without is problems, theres a lot of glitches here sometimes rendering the game implayable although this is very rare, i must say these problems DO NOT make a game poor unless the very core of the gameplay is poor. Now onto the graphics. the graphics are top notch as far as im concerned, theres a lot of close ups in the cutscenes on the characters faces to notice how awesome the textures and detail is. Our main heros face has a very distinctive scar on the left side of his face (which is revealled why later in the game) that looks incredibly real. The detail on the cars and levels as well as the breathtaking view of central park when your hanging from the side of the building near the beginning is unbelievable! The gameplay is good mixing first person gameplay with third person and the cinematics, dialogue and story is unusually superb.
Overall i thought this game was superb, not without its problems although they do not impact on the game at all. definately a masterpiece worth buying
